About this unit

In this GST and Indirect Taxes unit provided online by Open Universities Australia and Curtin University, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Fringe Benefits Tax and a number of other indirect taxes. You will not only learn the rules relating to these taxes, but also how they are applied.

By the end of this unit, you will have sufficient knowledge to understand GST and Fringe Benefits Tax requirements and also apply international benchmarks. Furthermore, the knowledge you will gain in this unit will allow you to apply the rules you have learned in relation to these taxes to a range of practical situations.

You will be able to locate and identify relevant rules and principles in relation to practical problems pertaining to these taxes, and also research such problems of your own accord. This is an important and essential skill for those going into tax or legal practice.

In order to enrol in this unit, you must be accepted into one of the following courses:

  • Graduate Diploma in Taxation, Curtin University
  • Master of Taxation, Curtin University

You must also have successfully completed the following unit, prior to enrolling:

  • Fundamentals of Australian Tax Law

This course can be paid for through the FEE-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, this means you don’t need to pay upfront.

Instead, the Australian government will pay your course fees on your behalf. You’ll begin repaying your loan through the tax system once you start earning more than the minimum threshold of $54,869 (2016-17 income year).
