About this course

Through the Master of Economics with the University of New England (UNE), you will gain an advanced understanding of economics whether you have previous qualifications in economics or in an unrelated discipline.

This online or on-campus course is a flexible program focusing on the disciplines of economics, agricultural and resource economics, and econometrics. UNE prides itself on its teaching and research strength in these subjects.

By the end of the course you will understand and be able to effectively communicate fundamental and advanced economic concepts, apply advanced analytical methods to problems faced by economists, and evaluate historical and contemporary economic events, as well as the responsibilities of economists today.

The degree combines coursework with independent research, enabling you to develop expertise and research skills that tie in with your ultimate work goals. It can also serve as a step towards pursuing a PhD in Economics.

Flexible exit options

If plans change, and you can no longer commit to the full Master of Economics, you could still be eligible to receive a postgraduate qualification. Depending on the credit points you've completed, you could exit with a Graduate Diploma in Economics.


To be eligible for entry into this course, applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Hold a bachelor's degree with a major in a non-relevant discipline; OR
  • Hold a bachelor's degree with a major in a relevant discipline, such as agricultural economics, economics or econometrics; OR
  • Hold a graduate diploma in a relevant discipline, such as agricultural economics, economics or econometrics.

In addition, you must also submit a statement with your application that outlines:

  • Your most significant experiences or professional achievements to date;
  • Your long term objectives and expectations of this course in fulfilling these objectives;
  • Where you see yourself in five years from now; and
  • Any other information you consider relevant to you admission.

You may be eligible for advanced standing if your previous education and experience meet certain criteria.

Eligible students can apply for FEE-HELP to cover the upfront costs of all or part of your fees.

Alternatively, you can pay annually for the units you select to study in that year.

The University of New England also offers a number of scholarships to successful applicants.

You may be eligible to receive FEE-HELP for this course!

This course can be paid for through the FEE-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, this means you don’t need to pay upfront.

Instead, the Australian government will pay your course fees on your behalf. You’ll begin repaying your loan through the tax system once you start earning more than the minimum threshold of $54,869 (2016-17 income year).
