About this unit

This unit in Plant Protection from Open Universities Australia and the University of New England covers the ecology, biology and management of pest organisms, such as insects, weed and diseases. You will study different control techniques, including ecological, physical, chemical and biological methods, and understand how integrated pest management can be applied.

The unit also explores the economic impact of different groups of plant pests, and focuses on the biological method of eradication of pests through natural enemies, management through environmental adjustment, and various pest-resistant strains and transgenic plants. You will also look at quarantine and combined methods of pest management for plant protection.

Upon completion of this unit you will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the effective detoxification and application of pesticides.
