About this unit

This is online Animal Diversity unit provided to Open Universities Australia and RMIT University will enable you to study and examine various animal structures and use the appropriate techniques needed to identify animals in phylum.

Throughout the course of this unit you will study vertebrate animals (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish) and invertebrate animals (echinoderms, nematodes, arthropods, annelids, molluscs, flatworms, cnidaria and sponges).

Upon completion you should be able to examine the structure of organisms and use that information to identify animals. As well as the variations in structure between phyla, you will also learn about the reasons for these differences and gain an understanding of the different groups of animals. Such skills are important in many career paths but most notably in the horticultural, agricultural and environmental fields.

On campus component

In order to complete practical subjects, students will be required to attend five half-days at RMIT University’s Melbourne campus.

Eligibility

There are no formal prerequisites for this unit; so anyone can apply. Students who have prior knowledge of biology and chemistry however will be at an advantage.

  • Amphibians and reptiles
  • Birds

  • Lesser phyla
  • Animal evolution
