About this course

Do you love working with animals? Then the Bachelor of Animal Science at the University of New England (UNE) can offer you an ideal pathway towards your dream career in animal management.

Three different major options allow you to focus your interests and specialise in either domesticated animals, companion animals (horses and dogs) or wildlife. You'll also have the option of completing this course with Honours (based on your grades in your final year of study), which gives you the opportunity to apply for a relevant research master's degree or a PhD.

The course includes four units of equine-related study from The University of Queensland, which will completed from UNE on a cross-institutional basis. Flexible course delivery means that you can undertake your degree online or on campus at Armidale.

Practical industry experience

This course includes a mandatory work placement component to ensure that you graduate with a strong mix of practical industry experience that complements your learning. You will be required to complete 12 weeks of placement, in consultation with the School.


To be eligible for entry into this course, applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Have completed Australian senior secondary studies; OR
  • Have completed overseas secondary qualifications or tertiary qualifications deemed equivalent to Australian qualifications; OR
  • Have completed Australian post-secondary or tertiary qualifications; OR
  • Have completed an approved admission scheme or pathway; OR
  • Have satisfied the requirements of an approved inter-institution agreement; OR
  • Have satisfied any additional requirements and/or selection criteria prescribed for particular courses; OR
  • Have obtained other equivalent qualifications and/or vocational experience; OR
  • Have satisfied the requirements for non-standard admission.

Assumed knowledge is mathematics; studies in biology and/or chemistry are recommended (the School offers introductory units in biology, chemistry and mathematics for students without the recommended background knowledge).

You may be eligible for advanced standing if your previous education and experience meet certain criteria.

Payment options & support

Finance options

Eligible students can apply for HECS-HELP to cover the upfront costs of all or part of your fees. Alternatively, you can pay annually for the units you select to study in that year.

The University of New England also offers a number of scholarships to successful applicants.

You may be eligible to receive HECS-HELP for this course!

This course can be paid for through the HECS-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, this means you don’t need to pay upfront.

Instead, the Australian government will pay your course fees on your behalf. You’ll begin repaying your loan through the tax system once you start earning more than the minimum threshold of $54,869 (2016-17 income year).
