About this unit

Previously known as Changing Bodies, Changing Selves, the AbNormal Bodies unit from Macquarie University explores the concept of the body in relation to how it informs our understanding of ourselves and of others.

In short, this online unit deals with the idea of the body and how this relates to identities, be these personal or community. As well as exploring who can claim ownership of what bodies, and why this is the case, the unit also looks at body modification such as tattooing and mutilation, for reasons such as ritual practice and pleasure.

To this end, the course uses a series of case studies, looking not just at the body itself but also at clothing and other props that affect identity. As well as case studies, the unit, which is delivered online through Open Universities Australia, explores other examples and debates surrounding bodily practice, focusing on experiences and consequences from multiple perspectives, both cultural and historical.
