About this unit

Once you understand the social structure, you will be better equipped to operate within it and affect change. This online unit of study from Macquarie University will introduce you to the basics of sociology and help you to apply this lens to the Australian and global contexts.

The unit starts with a definition of the discipline of sociology and its history, teaching you to question social facts and cultural constructs. You will then apply this knowledge to focus on the traits of Australian families and a study of their typical elements including their make up, gender roles and language.

By taking in the impacts of religion, media, race and ethnicity, and a number of other environmental factors pertinent to life in the 21st century, you will start to build up a picture of what modern society looks like for different constituents.

The power of social dynamics to influence a society’s success in terms of employment, crime and social cohesion is also addressed, alongside the impact of globalisation on such elements.

Delivered online by Open Universities Australia in partnership with Macquarie University, this unit is relevant to a range of arts and security studies qualifications.
