About this unit

Studying Foundations in Gender Studies online with Macquarie Univer-sity, you will be introduced to the complex and many-sided studies of sex and gender. Past and present issues and debates will be discussed and examined, and the topics of body, power and image and the chang-ing nature of sexual oppression and equality will be covered.

This is a unit in which a number of different disciplines, from history to literature and indigenous studies, will come to impact on your learning. International gender topics are presented, with reference to both past and present issues. Gender and sexuality in an Australian context will also be studied, giving you a local perspective of this complex field of study.

By the end of this course you will possess basic knowledge of gender theory in a current global context. You will also be able to analyse a va-riety of media and artistic mediums (art, film, literature, multimedia) within a gender studies framework. This unit will also help with creating and supporting original academic arguments using a number of different and varied academic and pop culture resources as references. You will have an in-depth understanding of the separation and connection of gender studies with feminism, and know just how the two disciplines interact in the academic field.
