Language, Culture and Communication is an online unit which offers a broad overview of the study of linguistics. Provided by Open Universities Australia and Macquarie University, it will give you an introduction to different ways of analysing language and its patterns.
Initially you will consider what qualifies as language and how sign systems and meaning take hold in a community. By exploring the emergence of language for children, you will consider how language is influenced by social and cultural contexts, and how it varies in different contexts. >
The unit also examines the power of language in politics and assesses the relationship between language and ideologies of everyday experience, asking how much power does language wield over society?
