Myth in the Ancient World focuses on Greek and Latin texts in translation, and the representation of myth in art. Additionally, Near-Eastern, Egyptian and Biblical texts will be studied.
During this unit, delivered online by Open Universities Australia in partnership with Macquarie University, you’ll learn how myth is relevant to these originating cultures, and how it influenced the social, political and cultural life of the classical world. Case studies and myths in this unit include the Trojan War, divine women, the Greek gods, the Roman Epic, and Ovid. You’ll also study where myth originates, archetypes of the ‘hero’ in myth, and delve into Egyptian funerary mythology.
