About this unit

According to Picasso, it took him four years to paint like Raphael and his lifetime to paint like a child. Whether you’re aiming for photo-realism or hard-edge abstraction, this unit of study on the technique of painting is an essential place to start.

Delivered online by Open Universities Australia, in partnership with Curtin University, this unit is a chance for you to begin with the basics and learn good habits, or perhaps unlearn some bad ones. You will start off by understanding the make-up of different types of paint and their associated effects, and once you are at home with your tools, you will be able to get onto the elements of composition.

The unit will also take you through shapes and the figure field, teaching you how to plan out your work. You will develop a greater understanding of tone and also the different associations and relationships that can be brought out in colour. If you’re serious about your practice, then you will also want to develop your personal style and push some boundaries.

This unit will give you the strong foundations you need, but you will also be encouraged to explore transformation in your work – all within a supportive environment that includes video conferencing and discussion forums.
