About this unit

This online Open Universities Australia and Macquarie University unit offers insight into the key areas of Qualitative Methods. Concepts such as ethics and politics and their influence on qualitative research practices will be explored, and will be considered throughout the unit. You will also discuss the importance of reviewing existing literature on the subject you intend to research.

Data collection and analysis will be discussed in depth. You will learn about the practices of and approaches to observation, the various types of interview and how to effectively lead a focus group. You will acquire an awareness of when and why it is appropriate to select particular qualitative methods over others, and will gain an understanding of why certain techniques will, at times, be entirely unsuitable.

You will become familiar with analysis techniques, and will gain an awareness of the issues and challenges associated with analysing primary data gathered during qualitative research. You will practice applying the methods of analysis known as grounded theory. Upon completion of this online unit, you will be competent in gathering and analysing qualitative data.

You cannot enrol in this unit if you have completed any unit deemed academically equivalent.

In order to enrol in this unit, you must be accepted into one of the following courses:
