About this unit

Building Services is an online unit offered by Open Universities Australia in association with Curtin University. Its focus is to explore the pivotal role building services play in facilitating the success of a construction project. Ensuring comfort and high energy-performance is a central function of modern building services; this will be considered alongside the costs associated with a building service installation.

To begin with, the unit considers the main different types of building service installations typically required. These include fire prevention, heating, ventilation and lighting. Throughout study, the cost and client expectations of such projects will be explained in detail.

Ultimately, on completion of the unit, you will be able to thoroughly analyse the different variables involved in estimating the time and cost implications of installing and coordinating building services.

How will this unit advance my career?

There’s no question construction is hard work. Equally though, there is no feeling quite like looking at a successful structure and knowing you helped to create it. However, if you’re interested in moving up the ladder in construction, a background such as this unit is a huge advantage. This is because ascending to management requires not just practical construction experience and ability, but also a strong theoretical understanding, both of which are offered during this unit.

How else will I benefit from this unit?

  • Upon successful completion of this unit you will receive credit for competencies in Building Services from Curtin University.
  • Studying online means you can study where you want, at your own pace.
  • Gain industry-relevant skills and transferrable knowledge.
  • Government financial support through FEE-HELP or HECS-HELP may be available.
