About this course

The Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) program offered by OTEN (TAFE) through SEEK Learning will give you the education and training to be able to build and manage your own small-to-medium-sized building business.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this course, you must have completed Year 12 or be over 18 years of age.

In this diploma program, the subjects you will study include:

• Apply principles of OH&S risk management
• Manage project quality
• Manage project risk
• Select and prepare a construction contract
• Identify and produce estimate costs for building and construction projects
• Apply structural principles to residential low-rise constructions
• Prepare and evaluate tender documentation
• Apply building codes and standards to the construction process
• Monitor costing systems on medium-rise building and construction projects
• Supervise the planning of on-site medium-rise building or construction work
• Manage construction work
• Apply structural principles to the construction of medium-rise buildings
• Supervise and apply quality standards to the selection of building and construction materials
• Select and manage building and construction contractors
• Administer the legal requirements to building and construction projects
• Build thermally efficient and sustainable structures

Finance options

If you are an Australian citizen you may be eligible to receive VET FEE-HELP for most OTEN programs, meaning you can defer payment of your course fees. Additionally, you may also be eligible to receive Abstudy/Austudy, Youth Allowance or private financing through SEEK Learning.

Student support

As a student of OTEN through SEEK Learning, you will be periodically contacted by your teachers to discuss your education progress. Your enquiries will also receive priority attention and your assignments will be marked and returned within seven working days.

Upon enrolment you will gain access to the OTEN Learning Support (OLS) site, where you will be able to receive course updates and view your study progress. General student support is also available during business hours or via email.

You will be eligible for a career as a builder or a manager in the building industry. You will also have the training to be able to further your education with an undergraduate degree through the University of Western Sydney or a number of other universities.
