About this unit

This Open Universities Australia and Griffith University unit in Communication and Public Value gives students insight into how organisations relate to public value, and will aim to provide students with a theoretical and practical familiarity with this model.

Students will learn how organisations identify the elements of their products and services that provide value to their customers, how they quantify this value upon having identified it, and finally, how they communicate the value of the goods and services they offer to the public.

Students will become familiar with the elements of various models used to implement the concept of public value, and will be required to design their own public value model for assessment purposes.

This online unit will guide students through the types of organisations and organisational activities that are most likely to benefit from utilising public value models. Students will be expected to develop their understanding of how communications activities influence, but also express, what is valued by publics.

How will this unit advance my career?

This unit offers students the opportunity to develop an understanding of public value, an essential element of business to consumer marketing. Students will develop this understanding through first learning about the historical context of value as a foundation for organisations, as well as the goods and services they offer. This online unit, developed by Griffith University, will teach students useful skills in comparing and evaluating a variety of value rationales. Though some of the knowledge students will gain during this unit will be quite specific to the topic of public value, this learning objective will encourage the development of general critical thinking skills.

Students will gain an understanding of the importance of developing indicators of benefits available to the public through goods and services. They will also become familiar with the concept of an organisation’s ‘authorising environment,’ and will learn to identify it, as well as to recognise the key relationships between its various elements. When students design their own public value model for assessment, they will be required to consider how the model enables the development and maintenance of good relationships with its authorising environment. These models should also include elements designed to improve internal and external communication processes for maximum efficiency.
