About this course

This online - course will qualify you for a number of roles in the media, whether you're on screen or behind the scenes. You will learn how to gather news, research and interview subjects, as well as write news stories for print and electronic media.

Delivered online by SEEK Learning in partnership with OTEN, the course focuses on audio-visual production, with units on making a presentation, writing narration and exploring issues on air. You will also get to know the writing and production processes and how to collaborate with fellow journalists, producers and technical staff.

Whether you're looking to work on a freelance basis or for a network, this course will get you camera and microphone-ready. You will also be prepared to manage projects in the journalism environment.

Eligibility

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, so anyone can apply. If you wish to pay for this course with a VET FEE-HELP loan however, you must:

  • Provide a copy of your Year 12 Senior Secondary Certificate; OR
  • Complete a Language, Literacy & Numeracy (LLN) test

Students will also require access to a range of equipment to facilitate video and audio capture/editing, as well as lighting.

Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a nationally recognised, accredited Diploma of Screen and Media (CUA51015) from OTEN - Open Training & Education Network.

This course will give you the knowledge and skills you need to write and edit content for a variety of media. You will learn collaborative techniques and hone your research and interviewing skills. On completion of this course, you will be prepared you to work as:

Finance options

If you are an Australian citizen you may be eligible to receive VET FEE-HELP for this OTEN program, meaning you can defer payment of your course fees. If you are not eligible for VET FEE-HELP, there are two other payment options:

  • Payment plans: Eligible students may be able to pay for this course through weekly, fortnightly and monthly repayments. This flexible payment plan does not require a deposit and involves no interest for the first 12 months. After this period, students will be charged 19.95% per annum on the amount that remains to be paid.
  • Upfront payment: Pay for this course upfront via credit card or bank transfer.

 

You may be eligible to receive VET FEE-HELP for this course!

This course can be paid for through the VET FEE-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, this means you don’t need to pay upfront.

Instead, the Australian government will pay your course fees on your behalf. You’ll begin repaying your loan through the tax system once you start earning more than the minimum threshold of $54,869 (2016-17 income year).
