About this unit

Independent Project is an online unit offered by Open Universities Australia in association with Griffith University. Although students are given free rein to select a topic they are passionate about, the central aim is to consolidate an understanding of analysis, evaluation, and the research process as a whole.

Compared to other units, which are prescriptive by their very nature, embarking on an independent project offers a far greater scope for creative or lateral thought. You will begin by investigating your chosen field within communications or new media, and then develop a paper containing insight and a strong argument.

Ultimately, if approached correctly, this communications unit is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding projects you can embark on. This is because it allows you to pick an area suited to your own personal interests and expertise, and gives you a platform to expand on these.

Eligibility

To be eligible to enrol, applicants must have successfully completed the following units:

  • New Communication Technologies
  • New Media: Communications in the Electronic Age

Applicants should also ensure that they have not already completed the following unit, as it is considered academically equivalent:

  • Communication Project

Areas of study

In this communications unit, there will be no formal unit topics/modules. Any unit work will be driven by the focus of the student's project, with guidance from their supervisor.

Course pathways

This unit is a core requirement in the following course:

  • Bachelor of Communication, Griffith University

Content may also be relevant to other courses, and could qualify you for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for a course offered by another institution.

How will this unit advance my career?

In our time-poor working economy, the ability to work independently is one of the most useful skills to any prospective employer. Completing an independent project demonstrates that not only do you have your own initiative and decision-making ability, but that you are also not averse to responsibility. Furthermore, with particular regard to the communications industry, most entry-level jobs demand research skills, as well as powers of analysis and evaluation – completing this project will prove that you possess these skills.

How else will I benefit from this unit?

  • Upon successful completion of this unit you will receive credit for competencies in completing an Independent Project from Griffith University.
  • Studying online means you can study where you want, at your own pace.
  • Gain industry-relevant skills and transferrable knowledge.
  • Government financial support through FEE-HELP or HECS-HELP may be available.
  • Studying single units allows you the flexibility to work towards a qualification at your own pace.
  • Receive Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for this unit across a number of OUA’s full degree programs.
