Swinburne University of Technology
The online postgraduate unit in Journalism, offered by Open Universities Australia through Swinburne University of Technology, will allow you to develop an understanding of how journalists work in what is a fast-paced and demanding industry. You’ll examine how news stories are constructed and disseminated, and you’ll also be given the opportunity to plan and write a feature piece that meets the standard expected by a newspaper.
Practical exercises such as this mean that this is a fairly hands-on unit. It is also varied in nature, given the rapidly developing art that is journalism, and you’ll also be given the chance to develop interviewing skills, as well as the opportunity to explore the medium of radio.
As well as the technical requirements of journalism, you’ll gain a contextual understanding of the function of the media in the modern world, and the restrictions that newspapers and media institutions work under.
You’ll be assessed in two ways: through an assignment, worth 60-70% of your eventual mark, and an online discussion, worth 30-40% of your final grade. Specific details will be revealed at the beginning of the unit.
