About this unit

Professional Research and Evaluation from RMIT University and Open Universities Australia aims to give you an overview of the importance of conducting good research, and the key skills and tools required to do so. The online unit explores the theories of research and the best way to develop targeted research questions.

As conducting research is vital to this unit, you will be taught the key ways to do so and the best methods for your individual projects. The unit will cover quantitative and qualitative methods, as well as touch on the importance of getting the basics right when researching. As well as this, the unit will demonstrate some of the issues that can arise when conducting research, and educate you on how to ensure your research is carried out ethically.

Learn how to plan your research with the aid of the theories covered early on in the unit, and to conduct your own comprehensive research project. The unit will also point out key literature to show you how to perform a literature review, allow you to combine these learnings with your own research findings.

In order to enrol in this unit, you must be accepted into the following course:

In this Professional Research and Evaluation unit, the topics you will study include:

  • From problem to plan: introduction to the unit and its assessment
  • Research practice and the philosophy of knowledge: qualitative and quantitative approaches
  • Literature 'reviewing' (i.e. evaluating) and annotated bibliographies
  • Theory frameworks in research, including the role of moral theory in research ethics
  • Populations, sampling, and questionnaires as a common survey method
  • Content analysis as a (mostly) quantitative method of data analysis
  • Textual analysis as a qualitative method for answering questions
  • Using the case study method; mixed methods
  • Poster presentations of your research plans
  • Review

This unit is not currently a requirement for any courses, but content may be relevant to a number of courses, and could qualify you for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for a course offered by another institution.

This course can be paid for through the FEE-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, this means you don’t need to pay upfront.
