About this unit

Public Writing is an online unit provided by Open Universities Australia in association with Griffith University. Its central focus is to familiarise you with the various different forms of contemporary writing, and their contrasting manifestations across different media. You will explore the histories and theories surrounding public writing, and learn how to adapt your own skills for specific audiences and purposes.

To begin with, you will examine the definition of public writing, with reference to Habermas’s theory of the public sphere. Following this, you will explore the different purposes and processes of public writing, as well as considering the power of rhetoric. Additionally, corporate communications will be analysed, as well as how effective public writing can help avert a crisis.

Ultimately, Public Writing provides you with a detailed knowledge of the many forms of public writing. Using these insights, you will be able to evaluate writing styles, as well as employ these tactics in your own writing to make it more impactful.
