About this course

The Diploma of Children’s Services program offered through SEEK Learning will give you the skills and training to be able to meet the varying intellectual, physical, emotional, social and language needs of children in care.

Studying this course, you will learn to care for babies and children, ensure children’s health and safety, foster and encourage children’s development, work with families to care for children, and manage a community sector organisation.

As a part of this government-accredited course, you will be required to arrange 400 hours of work placement in a children’s services setting and have this pre-approved by OTEN. As with all courses involving contact with children, you will also be required to sign a Prohibited Employment Declaration, which will be provided to you when you enrol.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this course you must have a Certificate III in Children’s Services.

Areas of study

In this Diploma of Children’s Services program, you will learn to:

  • Foster physical, cognitive and social development in early childhood
  • Support emotional and psychological development in early childhood
  • Foster children’s aesthetic and creative development
  • Use music as a medium to enhance children’s experience and development
  • Organise experiences to facilitate and enhance children’s development
  • Implement and promote inclusive policies and practices
  • Foster children’s language and communicative development
  • Establish and implement plans for developing cooperative behaviour
  • Gather, interpret and use information about children
  • Establish and maintain a safe and healthy environment for children
  • Work in partnership with families to provide appropriate care for children
  • Plan and implement inclusion of children with additional needs
  • Design, implement and evaluate programs and care routines for children
  • Manage children’s services workplace practices to address regulations and quality assurance
  • Manage a community sector organisation
  • Undertake research activities

Finance options

If you are an Australian citizen you may be eligible to receive VET FEE-HELP for this OTEN program, meaning you can defer payment of your course fees. Additionally, Australian residents may also be eligible to receive Abstudy/Austudy or Youth Allowance.

Student support

As a student of OTEN through SEEK Learning, you will be periodically contacted by your teachers to discuss your education progress. Your enquiries will also receive priority attention and your assignments will be marked and returned within seven working days.

How will this course advance my career?

This diploma is a recognised qualification that enables you to work in the child care sector.

Upon completion of this certificate program, you will be qualified to work in centre-based and family day care, and supervise staff and volunteers. In most states, this is the highest qualification required to work as a director or children’s service manager. Legislative regulations require that you must be at least 18 years of age to work in the children’s services industry.
