About this course

The government-accredited Diploma of Community Services (Alcohol, Other Drugs and Mental Health) program offered through SEEK Learning will give you training and skills in counselling, referral, advocacy as well as health promotion services.

Studying this diploma course, you will gain a thorough education in health issues related to mental health, and the use and misuse of alcohol and drugs. You will also gain complex skills to be able to provide services and intervention for clients. As a part of this Diploma of Community Services (Alcohol, Other Drugs and Mental Health) course, you are required to complete a minimum of 240 hours of practical experience in the community services industry.

If you are unable to find an approved work placement, you may be able to complete simulated workplace assessments online. You may be required to have police clearance before undertaking your work placement.

Entry requirements

To gain entry into this diploma program you must one of the following:

  • Be working or have recently been appointed to work in a community support mental health or AOD role and have a recognised higer education or vocation education qualification at certificate IV level or above

OR

OR

  • Have completed a certification IV in Mental Health or Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs (or related field) before 2010

OR

  • Have sufficient relevant work experience and knowledge of the mental health or AOD sector

  • Apply understanding of mental health issues and recovery processes
  • Conduct assessment and planning as part of the recovery process
  • Facilitate consumer, family and carer participation in the recovery process
  • Provide advanced supports to facilitate recovery
  • Provide a range of services to people with mental health issues
  • Reflect on and improve own professional practice
  • Access evidence and apply in practice
  • Provide community focused promotion and prevention strategies
