About this course

This Graduate Diploma of Counselling offered by JNI through SEEK Learning develops your counselling knowledge and skills to enable you to forge a successful professional counselling career.

This in-depth counselling course provides you with the advanced theoretical and practical expertise to practise as a professional counsellor in a clinical setting, whether community-based or in private practice.

In addition to studying psychology theory and developing advanced communication skills, you’ll learn about cognitive behaviour therapy, positive psychology, working with young people and victims of sexual assault and family systems therapy, as well as honing your social research skills. You’ll also critically reflect on your professional approach to counselling, exploring ethical and legal issues.

This counselling program is the second exit qualification that forms part of the Master of Counselling and Applied Psychotherapy course.

Eligibility

Applicants are required to have completed:

OR

  • A diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree in a related field plus extensive relevant professional experience.

Related fields include social work, psychology, nursing, teaching, welfare, counselling, rehabilitation counselling and behavioural sciences.

Practical components

Clinical placements provide students with the opportunity to put their education into practice. JNI operates counselling clinics on campus in Sydney. Students also have the option to complete their fieldwork with JNI's range of external clinical organisations.

In this graduate certificate, the subjects you will study include:

  • Understanding human behaviour across the lifespan: an introduction to psychology
  • Theories and practices of counselling
  • Practicum 1 – advanced therapeutic communication
  • The counsellor: ethics, legal and professional issues
  • The psychology of personality and counselling practices
  • Social psychology
  • Practicum 2 – clinical placement

And one of the following electives:
