About Interior Design

Over the last few years we’ve seen interior designers become a new breed of celebrity. It’s not surprising considering that most of us these days spend the majority of our free time in our homes – we all want our spaces to be worthy of a magazine feature.

While we’re more motivated to make our sanctuaries special, the design standards for public and commercial spaces are also being raised, especially as design is now firmly linked to strategies of community engagement, functionality, sustainability and successful branding. Interior designers, whether working from their own studios, within consultancies or in architectural practices, are considered a significant part of the larger design framework.

Good design is a balancing act between the fancies of our wildest imaginations and the unshifting realities of function. So while it’s a given that being an interior designer requires creativity, it is just as important to be able to work within the limitations of particular spaces. This is where the craft lies: applying the structure of a clear design process and utilising the models and tricks of the trade such as design and colour theory, CAD and drafting, aesthetics, ergonomics, lighting and acoustics.
