About this unit

An online unit provided by Griffith University and Open Universities Australia, Action Research in Middle Years allows you to complete a project based on the research proposal developed in the unit Realising Sustainable Middle Years Reform. Both units are core requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Middle Years Education at Griffith University.

In undertaking this unit, you will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the different forms, traditions and techniques of action research. You will apply social justice principles in the context of action research and write a critical academic paper articulating the research project undertaken.

Completion of this unit is designed to provide you with a grounding in research approaches and give you an opportunity to become a specialist in middle years education. The unit is assessed via presentation of a research paper and annotated bibliography.

Applicants must have already been accepted into the following course, prior to enrolling in this unit:

  • Graduate Certificate in Middle Years Education, Griffith University

It is also recommended that you complete the following unit, or have equivalent knowledge, prior to enrolling:

  • Realising Sustainable Middle Years Reform

Areas of study

In this Action Research in Middle Years unit, the topics you will study include:

  • Research of your topic of interest over the course of the semester (independent study – facilitated by lecturer)
  • Online research
  • Planning and implementation of an action research project in your classroom or school based on your research proposal
  • You will be expected to engage with online lectures and materials to guide your learning in action research and writing the proposal
  • You will use the resources provided to guide you in writing a final paper. This paper is an academic report of the research project
