This Education: The Psychological Context unit offered by Open Universities Australia and Macquarie University gives you an introductory look at the field of educational psychology. You will explore the ways in which theories and concepts from the field of psychology can be applied within the context of teaching and learning.
You will gain a basic level of understanding of the large area of developmental psychology. This will include learning about how physical, personal, social and moral development influence learning, as well as how the development of language skills plays a role. Much of the knowledge you will gain from this unit will help you to understand how students learn.
You will also explore the teaching side of educational psychology. This includes classroom management practices, and how teachers can motivate their students. You will also be expected to consider how what you learn in this online unit applies to you and your experience of learning.

This unit will give you a range of highly useful skills for pursuing a career in teaching. You will gain an understanding of how learning works, and how various aspects of psychological development influence the process. You will also become familiar with a range of resources and materials that can be used to engage students and support their learning. As we live in a computer aided age, you will learn about how ICT can be used to enhance learning.
You will also develop a selection of generic, highly transferrable skills during this online unit. The major report will require you to plan your own research, develop analytical skills, grow in confidence, and discuss educational matters in a coherent manner. You will also become proficient in assessing your own work. Self-reflection is encouraged throughout this unit in Education: The Psychological Context.
