About this unit

Professional Studies in Teaching and Assessment in Junior Primary aims to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of how to create safe, effective learning environments for students aged 6 to 8 years. Offered by Open Universities Australia in association with Curtin University, the unit explores key school contexts and classroom policies, before examining pedagogy and planning lessons in junior primary. Following this, you will examine inclusive teaching strategies and how best to foster a positive learning environment. Finally, you will learn how to plan an integrated teaching program before beginning your placement. Professional placement

This unit includes a three-week professional placement with children aged 6-8 years old in a school-based setting. Participation in this placement enables you to apply your theoretical learnings to real-world scenarios, and also addresses professional requirements as outlined by the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority’s Curriculum Specifications.

Eligibility

To be eligible to enrol in this unit you must be accepted into the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) course. You must also have successfully completed the following mandatory units, prior to starting this unit:

  • Teaching and Learning in a Digital World
  • Language and Literacy for Teachers
  • Child Development for Educators
  • Performing Arts for Educators

You must also have either successfully completed or be enrolled to complete the following mandatory conditional units:

  • Exploring and Contesting Curriculum
  • The Numerate Educator
  • Learning Theory for Educators
  • Teachers Inquiring About the World
