About this unit

Upon completion of the online Teaching Language and Literacy in Junior Primary unit through Open Universities Australia and Curtin University, students will be able to critique and contest current theories and issues in English teaching.

You will also be able to analyse effective teaching skills, processes and strategies in language, literature and literacies. Your abilities will also enable you to evaluate student skills and implement strategies to ensure learning outcomes.

  • Review previous unit as the content for Valuing Language is the foundation for facilitating literacy development
  • Build a knowledge base for teaching language literature and literacy
  • Build understandings of the key components of Literacy development and assessment skills for being a competent teacher of phonics, grammar, vocabulary
  • Explore current issues in English teaching and learning in the primary school years. What are the current theories for teaching English?
  • Identify relevant pedagogies for teaching language, literature and literacy in the primary classroom
  • Apply relevant pedagogies for teaching language, literature and literacy to primary school classrooms
  • Evaluate pedagogies and teaching methodologies for effective teaching of language, literature and literacy
  • Engage with English Curriculum: Language, Literacy and Literature including new literacies and Australian Curriculum
  • Teach reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and creating skills, processes and procedures
  • Use Language and Literacy teaching learning cycle and assessment. Identifying diverse learning needs
  • Apply culturally responsive teaching practices for inclusive learning
