About this unit

Learn about the properties of a range of materials used in engineering, and explore their atomic structures, relevant processing, and potentials for usage during this foundational Engineering Materials unit, offered by Open Universities Australia and the University of South Australia. Acquire an understanding of everything from crystal structures and the nature of bonding, to the mechanical properties of a range of materials.

Gain familiarity with the properties and characteristics of some of the primary groups of materials used in engineering, including metals and metal alloys, polymers, composites and ceramics. Discover how these groups of materials respond to stress, and develop the ability to identify and recognise common failure types. Failure prevention methods and strengthening mechanisms will be discussed in depth.

This course can be paid for through the HECS-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, this means you don’t need to pay upfront.
