About this unit

Upon completion of the University of South Australia’s Fluid and Energy Engineering unit, you will have a solid understanding of some of the most common tactics used to solve problems involving different types of energy.

The unit, offered online by Open Universities Australia, includes a closer look at thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer. In it, you will study these concepts, developing a strong foundational understanding of them.

In addition to a basic understanding of some of the biggest building blocks of engineering, you will also be able to apply classic fundamentals and laws to equations and other problems in an effort to conduct thorough analyses and draw conclusions.

  • Thermodynamic concepts and definitions, reversibility, first law of thermodynamics, non-flow and steady-flow equations
  • Properties of pure substances, reversible and irreversible processes
  • Flow representation, Bernoulli's equation, applications in flow measurements
  • Viscosity, boundary layers, laminar and turbulent flow
  • Drag forces on external surfaces, introduction to open channel flow
  • Linear momentum equation, applications dimensional analysis
  • Dimensional analysis
  • Analysis of flow in pipes and ducts
  • Incompressible fluid flow machinery, pipe work system design
  • Conduction and convection heat transfer
  • Heat transfer applications: thermal insulation, heat exchanger selection and radiation heat transfer
