About this unit

Manufacturing Processes is an online unit provided by Open Universities Australia in association with the University of South Australia, which provides you with insights into the diverse and wide-ranging processes involved in the act of manufacturing. From the use of jigs and fixtures for machining, to blanking, bending, and forging – this unit provides you with a strong theoretical and practical understanding of how to manufacture.

To begin with, you will explore the nature and manufacturing properties for a range of materials. Following this you will explore metal forming, bulk forming and casting, before examining theories of metal machining and related operations and tools. Additionally, product design and abrasive process will be addressed, as will the fundamentals of joining process.

Ultimately, Manufacturing Process equips you with a strong foundation of manufacturing knowledge, with which you can feel comfortable planning and engaging in machining tasks. You will understand how different materials require different approaches, as well as how to properly perform technical tasks such as deep drawing and stretch forming.

On campus requirements

As a part of this unit, students will be required to attend compulsory on campus classes in order to complete practical and laboratory work.

To be eligible to enrol in this unit, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be accepted into the Associate Degree in Engineering

AND

  • Have an introductory level of knowledge in this area or equivalent knowledge
