About this unit

This Mechanics of Materials online unit will introduce you to the mechanics of deformable bodies, and includes some structural analysis elements.

Focusing on stress and strain, the unit will look at a range of typical structures and their structural actions, concepts of strength and serviceability, and the distribution of stress in beams and columns under applied loads.

The unit will familiarise you with key concepts in structural engineering, provide instruction for calculating stresses and deflections and include some elements of design using design codes.

This engineering unit is delivered by Open Universities Australia and the University of South Australia for online study.
