About this course

The Master of Applied Theatre Studies from the University of New England (UNE) is the only course of its kind in Australia, offered entirely online.

The course is designed for theatre performers, directors, designers, playwrights and teachers to extend and advance their knowledge and skills. Students can specialise in a number of areas, including theatre production, dramaturgical research, and academic writing.

Graduates from this course will be equipped with refined professional and academic skills to assist them in advancing their careers in their chosen fields. Delivered online, this course allows students to attain a master's degree with a flexible off-campus study schedule.


To be eligible for entry into this course, applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Hold a bachelor's degree with a major or equivalent in Theatre Studies and have two years' experience as a performer, director, designer, playwright or teacher; OR
  • Hold a graduate certificate, graduate diploma, bachelor's degree with honours or master's degree in a relevant discipline, such as English, media and communications, performance, theatre studies or writing; AND
  • Submit a preliminary research proposal (approximately 500-800 words) which should:
    • Describe their proposed creative project for the Master of Applied Theatre Studies;
    • Include a rationale for the choice of creative work in the context of the overall research project and explain why this is significant;
    • Include a short reference list.

You may be eligible for advanced standing if your previous education and experience meet certain criteria.

Finance options

Eligible students can apply for FEE-HELP to cover the upfront costs of all or part of your fees.

Alternatively, you can pay annually for the units you select to study in that year.

The University of New England also offers a number of scholarships to successful applicants.


You may be eligible to receive FEE-HELP for this course!

This course can be paid for through the FEE-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, this means you don’t need to pay upfront.

Instead, the Australian government will pay your course fees on your behalf. You’ll begin repaying your loan through the tax system once you start earning more than the minimum threshold of $54,869 (2016-17 income year).
