About this unit

Risk Management and Financial Engineering teaches you to design, build and implement financial products and processes. By studying the latest developments in financial engineering, you’ll learn to produce financial tools that maximise returns and minimise risk.

This unit, delivered online by Open Universities Australia and RMIT University, will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the theory and practical application of financial instruments, and how they’re used to enhance return and manage risk. You’ll be taught to use prominent industry tools to hedge your equity, currency, interest rate risk and commodity exposure in real market conditions.

With a knowledge of financial markets and their most prominent and effective tools, you’ll learn to evaluate risk management and financial assets in order to maximise your own returns. Finally, you’ll combine all the skills and knowledge of the unit to produce innovative financial products and processes that will lower risk and produce reliable investment returns.

In order to enrol in this unit, you must be accepted into one of the following course:

  • Master of Finance, RMIT University

You must also have successfully completed the following units before starting this unit:

  • Corporate Finance
  • Quantitative Methods in Finance

This course can be paid for through the FEE-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, this means you don’t need to pay upfront.

Instead, the Australian government will pay your course fees on your behalf. You’ll begin repaying your loan through the tax system once you start earning more than the minimum threshold of $54,869 (2016-17 income year).
