About this unit

Concepts in Health Promotion Planning is an online unit provided by Open Universities Australia and Curtin University that is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of health promotion principles.

Students will examine the foundations of and rationale for health promotion, which is becoming increasingly important in today’s society. The unit trains students to effectively undertake needs assessments and evaluations, allowing students to gain the necessary skills to build programs tailored to the health goals of an individual or group. Psychosocial theory and planning are also addresses to help students examine why health planning has become such a topical issue.

This unit also covers health promotion interventions and lets students explore how society, particularly communities of a low socio-economic background, can benefit from programs and plans that promote active lifestyles and healthy eating. The unit addresses ways in which community development programs can be created and how practitioners can best engage with communities. Other topics covered include social capital, capacity building, sustainability and the application of theoretical and empirical evidence.
