About this course

The Master of Health Science program offered through GradSchool will give you the opportunity to tailor your health science education to your career goals. Studying this program, you can choose to specialise in either drug and alcohol studies or stroke management studies.

Studying a specialisation will give you a broad education in the area of your choice. Students of the drug and alcohol arm of the health science program will learn about epidemiology, clinical consequences of use and dependence, explanatory models, history and social context, and pharmacology.

Applicants who choose to study stroke management will gain the skills and training to be able to function as an expert clinician within specialist multidisciplinary stroke services teams.

Eligibility

Applicants who do not have a bachelor’s degree may receive entry if they have other acceptable or professional qualifications with relevant work experience.

Areas of study

This master’s degree program offers two specialisations:

To study the drug and alcohol studies specialisation, you will need to complete the following four subjects:

  • Epidemiology A – basic methods
  • Basis of drug/alcohol problems
  • Motivating health behaviour change
  • Clinical assessment of drug/alcohol use

To study the stroke management studies specialisation, you will need to complete the following four subjects:

  • Epidemiology A – basic methods
  • Stroke: Acute management
  • Stroke: Rehabilitation
  • Stroke: Knowledge transfer

For both specialisations you will need to choose three subjects from the directed subjects list.

Practical components

Students undertaking the Drug and Alcohol Studies stream of this program are required to do 100 hours of practical experience for the subjects Motivating health behaviour change and Clinical assessment of drug/alcohol use.
