About this course

The Master of Public Health course is a multidisciplinary health program designed for public health practitioners and those wishing to develop their skills and knowledge in public health. As a student of this course, you will complete a number of core units covering a broad range of public health topics as well as a specialised research project in one major discipline.

On completion of this program you will have the education and training to be able to critically evaluate public health issues and public health information, provide effective and targeted public health communication, understand the impact of inequalities and social disadvantage on individual and community health, develop effective self-management and learning programs, conduct ethically appropriate research, and use the relevant technologies.

Eligibility

This is a restricted program. Enrolment is only available to students who have been accepted into this program.

Study periods

Open Universities courses are offered in specific study intakes every year, known as Study Periods or Sessions. This means more flexibility as you can choose when to start studying.

If you are studying undergraduate units you can start at the beginning of any of the four Study Periods each year, each lasting 13 weeks. Most postgraduate courses are offered in three Sessions per year, with each Session lasting 14 weeks.

Exams are usually held in the week following the end of each Study Period or Session.

Areas of study

You will have the opportunity to specialise in the following areas:

  • Public health
  • Health promotion
  • Environmental health
  • Nutrition
  • Applied epidemiology and biostatistics

Shorter programs

If you choose not to study the entire Master of Public Health degree you may be able to complete an alternative qualification. This is beneficial for students who need to develop a specialisation or prefer not to commit to the whole study period.

Depending on the units studied, you can exit with a:

  • Graduate Certificate in Public Health
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health
