About this unit

This online Outbreak: The Detection and Control of Infectious Disease unit is a highly practical way to learn about the way in which society responds to infectious disease outbreaks, and what needs to happen to identify, contain and remedy these outbreaks.

Delivered by Open Universities Australia in partnership with RMIT University, the unit simulates outbreaks and lets students form teams to mimic the way outbreak investigations are carried out.

By studying in this hands-on approach, students learn how to identify hazards that may lead to outbreaks, source information to control outbreaks and implement procedures to ensure infectious disease control.

The types of outbreaks covered include tropical diseases, food borne diseases as well as health care outbreaks and bioterrorism.

The unit is a great introduction to infectious disease control, and will help you gain a deeper understanding of how diseases move and spread throughout society.
