About this unit

This Public Health Practicum unit from Open Universities Australia and Curtin University is an excellent stepping stone to a career in public health, and gives you the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience with a relevant health agency.

This is a practicum unit, meaning that as well as online study, you will seek a relevant placement in the community, enabling you to begin applying your knowledge to real-world scenarios. You will also be expected to critically and honestly evaluate your productivity and progress.

By studying this unit you will learn an array of new skills and knowledge, as well as how to apply them to professional situations regarding public health. Both written and oral skills will be polished and adapted to enable you to convey your newly gained information to a variety of audiences.

Work placement

This unit includes 100 hours of work placement with a relevant health agency in the community. Students will consult with the course coordinator in order to locate a suitable placement.

In order to enrol in this unit, you must be accepted into one of the following courses:

  • Graduate Diploma in Health Promotion
  • Master of Health Promotion
  • Graduate Diploma in Public Health
  • Master of Public Health

This course can be paid for through the FEE-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, this means you don’t need to pay upfront.

Instead, the Australian government will pay your course fees on your behalf. You’ll begin repaying your loan through the tax system once you start earning more than the minimum threshold of $54,869 (2016-17 income year).
