About this unit

No matter your industry, in today’s interconnected world it pays to have a global perspective. This online unit of study provides just that, as it gives you everything from the changing definition of what makes up a nation right through to an understanding of the contemporary Occupy movement.

The unit, delivered online by Open Universities Australia and Macquarie University, covers topics as broad as the Cold War right through to security issues of the modern world.

By studying this unit you will be taught about international relations and also the international institutions through which power and politics flow. The unit takes a broad view, but focuses in on some major areas of interest including the issue of poverty, climate change and environmental security and the rise of China in the 21st century.

You will also learn to analyse power relations and the political economy and put social movements within their global and historical contexts, including contemporary concerns such as those addressed by the Arab Spring and the Occupy movement. Such skills are key for anyone studying security or journalism-related disciplines, or anyone majoring in politics or international relations.
