About this unit

This online unit, awarded by Swinburne University and delivered by Open Universities Australia, aims to provide you with an in-depth understanding of the scope and requirements involved in successfully managing resources for IT projects.

You will gain insight into how to most effectively manage both human and capital project resources, including making estimates, matching deliverables, and allocating resources according to project schedule, in order to deliver value for money to the business.

The unit will also allow you to develop a broader understanding of the importance of managing all project resources effectively, along with the profound impact resource management can have on the duration, timeliness and outcome of each particular project.

Assessment for this unit will take three forms: an individual assignment (25%), a group presentation and report (30%), and an invigilated exam (45%).

In order to enrol in this unit, you must be accepted into one of the following courses:

  • Graduate Diploma of Information Technology Project Management, Swinburne University
  • Master of Information Technology Project Management, Swinburne University

It is also recommended that you complete the following unit, prior to enrolling:

Upon successful completion of this unit, you’ll have developed a thorough understanding of what IT resources are available, and how they can be managed most effectively to ensure value for money for a business. The unit will also give you an understanding of the role a project manager plays in managing resources.

On completion, you will understand the differences between in-house resources and external resources, and when and how to best make use of each within an IT project. You will be able to demonstrate your ability to use appropriate resource management tools and techniques, including project management software, and develop successful strategies for acquiring, allocating and managing IT project resources. You will understand the importance of evaluating the performance of different resources throughout a project’s life cycle, and know how best to implement the addition or removal of resources during an ongoing project.
