About this unit

If you’re studying information technology and want to gain relevant skills, then you will need to understand programming languages. The scripting languages are different to system programming languages such as C or Java, and can be a powerful link between applications.

You will start by learning the differences between the scripting languages, so that you have the appropriate base of knowledge. From this you will understand which language is suitable for what purpose, and be able to make decisions based on their strengths, weaknesses and suitability to the task.

Unit topics cover everything from data structures and file handling, to web development, so that you have a range of practical applications for your new knowledge.

By the end of the unit you will be able to code using the Unix shell scripting languages Perl and Python, and be able to write scripts using their associated CGI facilities.

Delivered online by Open Universities Australia in partnership with RMIT University, this unit is an approved elective for Swinburne’s Bachelor of Technology (Information Systems) and RMIT’s Bachelor of Technology (Computing Studies).
