About this unit

In this online Federal and State Constitutional Law unit, which is offered by Open Universities Australia and awarded by RMIT University, you will learn about many different aspects of Australian constitutional law. This includes looking at the bigger picture of the Australian Constitution, such as the rudimentary ideas involved and the special composition of the constitution.

You will look at the historical examples of the constitution, including the pre-federation constitutions and the constitutions of Australia’s colonial period. You will also look at other historical examples, such as the way the British parliamentary system is applied and the push for a federal Australia.

By looking at both the law and politics of Australia, you will gain an understanding of federalism, separation of powers, and the different sources of legislation. This unit will also allow you to learn about the relationship between the legislative, the executive and the judiciary.

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible to enter this program:

  • You must have successfully completed the unit, Introduction to the Australian Legal System and Legal Methods

AND

  • Be enrolled in the Juris Doctor course
