In this Open Universities Australia and RMIT University unit, you will be required to conduct a piece of legal research in a chosen area of law with the aim of producing a project that addresses options for reforming the law.
During the Legal Research Project unit, you will have the opportunity to gain valuable legal practice experience and understanding by shadowing magistrates working in the courtrooms and behind the scenes at the Victorian Magistrates’ Court, learning about case management, mediation and case preparation.
Your project may be supervised by the Centre for Innovative Justice, as the centre strongly advocates access to justice, alternative dispute resolution (ADR), problem-solving courts, and innovation in the justice system. You can also undertake your project at other centres, including the Fitzroy Legal Service or Human Rights Law Centre.
To enrol in this unit, must be accepted into the Juris Doctor course, have completed the following mandatory unit:
Learning in this unit occurs primarily through self-directed learning in legal research, and will be carried out under the supervision of the unit coordinator.

This unit forms part of the Juris Doctor degree at RMIT University and as such will help you to work in positions that require a legal qualification or could add a legal element to your existing undergraduate qualification. The unit will provide you with excellent experience of producing quality legal research under the guidance and support of leading institutions. The unit will also furnish you with practical experience of working within a legal setting.

This course can be paid for through the FEE-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, this means you don’t need to pay upfront.
