The Graduate Diploma in Extractive Metallurgy course offered through Open Universities Australia is ideal for science graduates who wish to gain entry to the minerals and resources industry, or current professionals who wish to acquire specialised skills and knowledge to advance their career.
In this graduate program, you will learn the fundamentals underlying metal extraction and process engineering to control and improve the process of separating, concentrating and recovering minerals and metals from ore bodies.
To be eligible for this course you must have a Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent.
Open Universities courses are offered in specific study intakes every year, known as Study Periods or Sessions. This means more flexibility as you can choose when to start studying.
If you are studying undergraduate units you can start at the beginning of any of the four Study Periods each year, each lasting 13 weeks. Most postgraduate courses are offered in three Sessions per year, with each Session lasting 14 weeks.
Exams are usually held in the week following the end of each Study Period or Session.

Upon completion of this course, you will have a recognised qualification in mineral processing and extractive metallurgy that could lead to work as a metallurgist on mine sites in metal recovery and concentration operations, in metal refineries, smelters, foundries, or in research and technology development.
Extractive metallurgy is an area of high demand, with the Western Australian Department of Training and Workforce Development listing extractive metallurgists as a priority occupation.

This course can be paid for through the FEE-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, this means you don’t need to pay upfront.
