About Astronomy

‘Astronomy compels the soul to look upwards and leads us from this world to another.’ – Plato

Astronomy is one of the oldest and most fascinating fields of natural science, one in which you literally get to unravel the mysteries of the universe. From supernovae explosions and gamma ray bursts to the discovery of dark energy and cosmic background radiation, astronomy is a field that moves faster than the speed of light, and it’s one where astounding new discoveries are constantly being made.

In the past 100 years alone, we have learnt more than we have ever known previously about our universe and the galaxies around us, with revelations from the likes of Einstein, Hawking, Hubble and other great astronomers and physicists.

We now know our universe is estimated to be 13.75 billion years old, that the sun produces so much energy that every second the core releases the equivalent of 100 billion nuclear bombs, and that Pluto is indeed not a planet.
