Swinburne University of Technology
This online Basic Statistical Computing unit from Open Universities Australia, in partnership with Swinburne University, will teach you how to use a major statistical software package to analyse data.
The first section of this program introduces you to the software package and the basic elements of its operation. You will understand the syntax used by this program and in turn how data is structured.
The second section of this unit teaches you how to manipulate and work with data. You will learn how to merge data sets, compute new variables, translate data between formats, and how to generate the syntax to apply data management procedures. You will also learn how to identify which descriptive statistical procedures should be applied to certain types of data, and how to use the software package to apply them.
The final section of this unit introduces you to the data visualisation features of the package. You will learn about the variety of graphs available in this program and how any missing values can be imputed.
In order to enrol in this unit, you must have been accepted into one of the following courses:
Graduate Certificate of Science (Applied Statistics), Swinburne University
Accepted to Graduate Diploma of Science (Applied Statistics), Swinburne University
Accepted to Master of Science (Applied Statistics), Swinburne University You should also ensure that you have not completed a previous or academically equivalent version of this unit. Note: You will be required to have access to a current version of SPSS (at least SPSS Grad Pak).
In this Basic Statistical Computing unit, the topics you will study include:

This unit will introduce you to the key concepts within Basic Statistical Computing. This knowledge will be useful if you are looking to work in an industry which requires an understanding of statistical computing, or are looking to further your knowledge of statistics.
Basic Statistical Computing will instruct you on the use of a major statistical software package and how to use this software to analyse a range of data types. This knowledge is very applicable to any number of careers in which you would be required to use statistical computing regularly, or analyse data.
You will learn about the syntax used to manage data, which procedures to apply to modify and select data, and be able to identify and apply the appropriate descriptive statistical procedures to different types of data. This comprehensive introduction provides the essential information needed to apply this information either within a professional environment or for further study.
