This unit, provided through Open Universities Australia and RMIT University, is designed to give you a broad foundation in university-level chemistry.
You will study a range of topics, beginning with chemical bonding and its influence on the structure, shape and properties of molecules. You will also learn about the chemistry of alkanes, alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers and amines. Finally, you will delve into chemical equilibria, electrochemistry and energy changes in chemical systems.
Upon completion of Chemistry of Materials 1, you will have a comprehensive grounding in chemistry, with an insight into bonding processes and chemical reactions. You will understand the Molecular Orbital Theory and the relationship between a molecule’s structure and reactivity. You will also have practical experience completing chemistry experiments in a safe and scientific manner.
This unit requires two days of mandatory laboratory exercises at RMIT University in Melbourne.

This course can be paid for through the FEE-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, this means you don’t need to pay upfront.
