About this unit

Essential Mathematics 2: Calculus, provided by the University of South Australia through Open Universities Australia, will guide you through an introduction to core mathematical principles.

By studying this online unit, you will be able to apply elementary manipulative skills to solve mathematical problems, as well as formulating simple applied problems in mathematical language.

You will be able to use the principles of elementary differential and integral calculus in the solution of applied problems.

Eligibility

In order to enrol in this unit, you must have successfully completed, be currently enrolled in or intending to enrol in the following unit:

  • Essential Mathematics 1: Algebra and Trigonometry

You must also ensure that you have not completed a previous version of this unit.

  • Graphs of equations, functions and their graphs
  • Limits, continuity
  • The slope of a tangent line, the derivative
  • More on the derivative, maximum and minimum problems
  • The chain rule, implicit differentiation, the sign of the derivative
  • Rectilinear motion, related rates, higher-order derivatives
  • Graph sketching, sine and cosine functions
  • Graphs and derivatives of sine and cosine functions, the tangent and other trigonometric functions
  • Antiderivatives, the definite integral
  • Fundamental theorem of calculus, area and arc length
  • The natural logarithm, the exponential function
  • L' Hopital's rule, exponential growth and decay, trigonometric substitutions
