About this course

The Graduate Diploma of Mathematics course offered by Charles Sturt University is an online qualification designed to provide a solid mathematics foundation to those who have not necessarily studied the subject at a tertiary level.

You will cover topics including algebra and calculus through a range of blended learning techniques, and be introduced to mathematical computer software program, Maple, and encouraged to apply this when solving advanced problems.

This qualification can be used in a range of fields including secondary teaching, technical mathematics roles, research and extension work. It can also be used as a refresher course for those who wish to extend their previous mathematics training.

Practical work placement

There is a practical work placement component for the teaching stream subject Generalised Linear Models. This unit contains a two-day optional residential school.

Shorter programs

If you choose not to study the entire Graduate Diploma of Mathematics you may be able to complete an alternative program. This is beneficial for students who need to develop a specialisation or who prefer not to commit to the whole study period. Depending on the units studied, you can exit with a Graduate Certificate in Mathematics.


Applicants must meet the criteria to be eligible to enter this program:

  • Hold an undergraduate degree; OR
  • Hold a relevant, academically orientated TAFE qualification; OR
  • Hold a teaching qualification; OR
  • Have a minimum of one year of relevant work experience

Applications for distance education and postgraduate courses are accepted all year 'round. Provided you are eligible for admission, your application will be held for consideration in the next available intake.

Students in the teaching stream (for retraining as a secondary mathematics teacher), must also complete the curriculum subject, the professional experience and at least two restricted electives.

This course can be paid for through the FEE-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, this means you don’t need to pay upfront.

Instead, the Australian government will pay your course fees on your behalf. You’ll begin repaying your loan through the tax system once you start earning more than the minimum threshold of $54,869 (2016-17 income year).
